Roosl's Custom Software for Windows

Please note: Several of my programs may be found at various, dubious download sites, such as SoftPedia.com (and some I haven't even heard of). I did not post my software on those sites, and did not ask that it be offered on those sites. I am not responsible for out of date versions those sites may have, nor am I responsible for any adware, malware, pop-ups or piggy-back code those sites or the downloads they provide may contain.

This site is the only place to get the latest, and guaranteed versions of my files. The sites listed below are also OK, as I voluntarily offer my software there, and update it when I update this page (their copy may be a number of days getting posted). Not all of my offerings below are available on other sites. However, you can search for "roosl" as well as find other good stuff there.

These sites are OK:

If you have obtained any of my software from a site I have not authorized, please find a new copy below. If it is licensed, please contact me and I will send you a free full license key even if you have not previously purchased one. No questions asked.

Confidence and Trust

Similar to how anti-spam software can sometimes mistake valid e-mail as spam, some anti-spyware programs can mistake benign software as spyware. Some time ago, a release of one vendor's spyware definitions mistook one of my distributions as such. I assure you that I will never release such software. If your anti-spyware program thinks that anything you have from me is such, you may confidently flag it as "ignore", or "keep", depending on your anti-spyware settings. You have my promise that there is no malicious code!

You may have found my stuff on another download site. On this page you will find the lastest versions of all software (and some that never are posted elsewhere). Some sites such as SoftPedia took it upon themselves to post my stuff, but they let it get out of date and will not respond to my requests to get it updated. I apologize, and am happy you found this page!

Avoid SoftPedia.com! I have learned from various others like myself, who have had their files posted there without their asking, and they too cannot get the site to update or remove their work! I have removed their phony icons from my site, and respectfully ask that you only download the latest files from here.

General info:

The following applies to licensed programs:

During install, I used to search your system for older versions. Since newer systems have such large (or numerous) drives, this feature is now turned off (it just takes too much time). This means that if you install an update, and any shortcuts (for example) point to an older version, it's up to you to correct the problem. I won't find it for you. If you've tried to install prior versions on a newer system, and it seemed to take forever to do anything, that's why!

When errors occur during install, pop-ups have been enhanced to remind you about Vista UAC (see Vista notes above). Most installation issues are directly the result of Vista UAC.

Licensed software now fully supports standard uninstall via Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs (to remove older versions and free utilities, just delete the files from the installation folder).

System Monitor Utility (Free) - Last build January 11 2008

System Monitor download
System Monitor download
System Monitor download
System Monitor download

These 4 oversized images are examples of display modes, described below.

This utility program provides information about various system resources and usage statistics. New version 3.0 is redesigned with new features and supports huge amounts of RAM and disk space, several bugs have been fixed, and legacy support for Win 9x has been removed. New snapshot metric reports have been added as well, and mouse-over user help has been added!

The monitor windows constantly display percent usage via "thermometer" graphics and colors. System information includes:

Windows "Up Time" (The actual date and time Windows was started are also displayed)
   Windows version information
   CPU(s) info
   Total RAM
   Total Virtual memory (Swap file)
   Colors and resolution info
   Usage of:
      Total System Memory
      Overall Memory Utilization
      RAM Memory in use
      Swap Space in use
      Percentages of Free Resources

The indicators constantly update (in about 1 second intervals) the current usage of each resource. The most recent "high mark" and "low mark" is also shown. The color changes from green to yellow to red, depending on percentages of a low or high preset. The system monitor includes and optionally starts a Disk Monitor.

Disk monitor can also be run stand-alone. Disk information includes:

Total capacity for all and each monitored drive
   Current usage for each drive

Up to 6 drives are monitored in each disk monitor window. The monitor will automatically start a disk monitor for each group of 1 to 6 drives. If a monitored disk is removed (such as a floppy or CD) or disconnected (such as a network drive) while the monitor is running, it will display such until that drive is again available.

Each monitor window may be closed independently. You may resize the monitors and arrange them independently. They will automatically adjust their aspect ratio (width x height) to maintain the display, and will appear at the screen location and size they were when last used.

Features of Use

Each Monitor has four small buttons.

Upper-left button:
Toggles between full display (as in image 1 above) and graphic only (as in image 2). This saves desktop space when you wish to leave them running while doing other things. Set it for graphic only, resize it as small as you want and move it down near the taskbar, for example.
System Monitor download
The size and screen position of each display mode is remembered.

Lower-left button:
This toggles between bars only and numbers display. When numbers are "on" and you move your mouse cursor over the display, the colors leave to easily view the usage and free values (as in image 4).

Upper-right button:
This toggles between the current monitor size and position and the original "factory" setting. The last position and size of a monitor (when it was closed) is that which is used the next time you start it.

Lower-right button:
This will generate a detailed report of current statistics for the current monitor and present it in a notepad window. The Sysmon report also includes many other Windows metrics for your system and environment settings.

The area at the bottom of the Sysmon window displays usage reminders when you pass your cursor over the window. By placing your cursor over a button, the display indicates what that button is for. Right-clicking in the area when indicated will start the disk monitor.

Numeric Base Converter (Free) - Last build January 12 2008

Numb3rs download

Here's one I did for myself some time ago, and decided recently to give away to those who find it handy. This program provides conversion among binary, octal, decimal and hexadecimal numbers (32 bit max) via a dynamic dialog. As you type (or paste) into a box, the entire display is updated with corresponding values. Charts, including the full ASCII chart and HTML symbols are available.

Desktop Calendar (Free) - Last build January 11 2008

Calendar download

This program provides a small, familiar calendar you can place anywhere on your screen. It will always return to it's last location when it's started. Flip through the calendar by day, month and year by clicking in it. As well as simply displaying the calendar and the current date, it includes a manager which pops up reminders of appointments and anniversaries which you define in a nice editor. The manager also displays the time which you may turn on/off.

Includes usage help.

Binary Clock Display (Free) - Last build January 11 2008

12 hour clock

"There are 10 kinds of people. Those who understand binary, and those who do not."

Here is a cute little clock program. It displays the time in binary (note the time displayed in the image is 08:25:29 PM). It's fun to watch the display change as the seconds tick.

   Hour=red
   Minute=blue
   Seconds=green

Each row has 6 positions, from right to left representing the values 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32, each on or off.

24 hour clock Pass cursor over to show the time in the title bar Have it display the binary values Other settings

You can set it to display in 12 hour (AM/PM) or 24 hour mode. Pass your cursor over the clock to show the time in the title bar. Have it display the binary values. Hold your right button down in the clock to pop-up the settings window. You may resize it to suit. It will adjust its width to height ratio to maintain its display. If you "maximize" it, the screensaver effect is also entertaining.

Desktop Window Manager (Free) - Last build February 08 2010

Supports multiple-monitor configurations, and includes spiffy new windows reporting and desktop probe tool.

Version 4.5 integrates WinTitle, which allows you to rename window titles. See WinTitle below.

This utility program provides a means for managing the desktop location of each of your favorite application windows. This is for those of us who share our PC with others, and/or use those applications whose windows won't appear in the same location each time.

It may seem frivolous to some of us, but many folks want or need to keep their desktop layout in a consistent state, or want the same set of applications running with different window sizes depending on access method (remote desktop). As well, we work on different projects where we may like things one way for this project, and re-arranged and re-sized for another.

If you get annoyed having to resize and drag your favorite windows back to where you want them after someone else moved them around, or the application doesn't put its window where you want it, this program will remember each of these windows, its desktop location AND size you prefer, and keep them there. It's also handy using remote desktop, as when you're in the office, the desktop and window positions may be different than when your "remoted in" and the desktop size is affected by the remote desktop window. It has options to automatically cascade windows of the same known type (and re-cascade when one closes), or to ignore different sizes of similar windows.

Multiple desktop arrangements may be saved so that you may switch between different settings for users, projects and situations.

Includes help and easy controls via simply clicking the icon in the system tray. Instructions (help window) pop up automatically when it's first run, and are easily recalled with two clicks.

aka anal desktop

UI system offers a "Desktop Probe" tool which dynamically displays all sorts of desktop and window data as you move your (mouse) cursor. Move and re-size preset windows while the monitor is suspended, then refresh and reset them.

Detailed report generation (into a notepad window) provides information about all running windows (even those you can't see), parent-child windows, and the modules that created them, and more.

WinTitle (Free) - Last build February 08 2010

This utility is included in the Desktop Manager download (above). Details as to its usage along with the Desktop Manager are included in that help file.

WinTitle will display the titles of all open normal windows and allow you to change their titles to anything you want.

CAUTION: Be aware that some applications expect their window title to be as set by the application, and renaming it may cause undesirable results. I will say that this is true for some of my own programs. Thus, you are on your own utilizing this utility.

WhoDat - Roosl's WhoIs/Web Utility (Free 30 day trial) - Last build April 12 2008

WhoIs Utility download (Zip)

This utility provides methods of identifying who web addresses belong (or are registered) to. As well, using information such as URLs (links), e-mail addresses, e-mail headers and domain names, you can see where information really comes from, and where URLs really take you when you click on them, and even read the web page's source code to see what it might be doing (such as malevolent javascript) other than displaying information.

This program actually came about as a result of my investigation into (and curiosity about) fraudulent "phishing" spam e-mail. As part of the user guide (as examples of real use), I share with you the actual e-mail data and the steps used with this software to delve into the origin of the mail and how the thieves "hijack" your browser and a major bank's website.

Now, we are also subject to "Pharming". Pharming is the newest method whereby, via spyware on your PC or via a hacked DNS server, your browser is redirected to a fraudulent site which appears to be your intended destination. For example, you type (or use your favorites for) your bank's web site name. But instead of going to "www.mybank.com", you end up someplace else.

However, since your bank's address (and all internet addresses) are actually IP addresses, you may always know you're going to the right place if you use the IP address instead of the name address. Using this program, you can easily check your bank's URL by name, and get the IP address, then use the IP address in your browser!

Standard "Who Is" searches.
Get "Who Is" data by domain or IP address.
Finds the IP address for a host, or host name from an IP address.
View the source code for any web page.

Features:
URL tracking/Fraud prevention
- An example of tracking an actual spam/phish email is below.
Cache (store history) up to 1000 searches.
Save search results to text files.

Review the Detailed User Guide (included) for details and descriptions of the many uses this powerful tool can provide! Including a tutorial of tracking actual phishing fraud!
Note: Like this site, the user guide is HTML 4.01 compliant, so your local browser (where you'll use this software) must support this standard.

Color Tool (Free) - Last build January 15 2008

Color tool download
Color tool download

Yet another color picker tool! I decided to update and post this old toy as it has been handy, especially if you're trying to pick a specific shade and get tired of trial and error with the values in an application (such as editing HTML, for example).

Pick a color, optionally have it display all the lighter or darker shades. Pick a shade from the index display, and do it again. Any color selected displays its Hex and Decimal numeric values for use where needed. Whatever colors/shades are displayed when it is closed re-display the next time. Click "Clear Shades" to return to the display index of the colors you have added. Clicking on the current color or typing a value in the decimal or hex box and hitting enter brings up the standard Windows color picker dialog. A new color is added to the index display. An existing color's location (index number) is shown.

Filename Fixer (Free) - Last build October 11 2009

Filename Fixer download

A handy file utility I wrote for myself, then decided to give away. When I copied all my files to my new workstation, many of them ended up with ALLCAPS filenames. Not all, not any particular rhyme or reason. Windows just named some of them in ALL CAPS! Ok, in explorer, it's just ugly, and Windows may not care. However, if you upload your files elsewhere, their use and access may be case-dependent (such as HTML, or image files referenced in a URL). Since, in my case, there were hundreds of them scattered all over the place, I grew weary of discovering them and renaming them one-at-a-time in explorer, so I wrote this little program. Then I added some extras and decided to let you use it too.

Once files are selected, you may click any rename button and apply that rule to the those filenames. You may also apply another rule button to the same files. The select button will change to "Select Other Files" when filenames are currently selected. The selected rule button will change to green to indicate which rule will be applied if you select other files.

The Upfirst button will upshift the 1st character of each word in a filename, and downshift the rest (for example): My Text File.txt.
The lower button will downshift all the characters in a filename (for example): my text file.txt.
The UPPER button will upshift all the characters in a filename (for example): MY TEXT FILE.txt.

If you uncheck the "extensions always lower" box, then the same rule will apply to the file extension. Otherwise (default), the extension is made lower case.

After the selected files are renamed, another dialog (similar to the file selection) appears to display the folder contents. This is informational only, just click cancel here.

Incremental File/Folder Backup tool (Free) - Last build February 25 2010

Incremental File/Folder Backup download

Note! If you have a version older than February 25 2010, this one will not display your previous backup jobs (they're not "gone", they simply won't appear in the lists). This is due to the improved job history (see below) included in this new version!

This is another tool I did for myself and thought you'd like it too, and I've added some new features, as well. This one is a very fast file backup utility. Periodically, I backup my system to an external drive. Between full backups, I want to backup new stuff, and changes made since my last backup. Then, when I do another full backup, I usually delete the incremental backups. In my case, I make these incremental backups of files on C: to my D: drive, and to the C: drive for files on D: (so if I lose a drive, hopefully it's only one of them).

This utility will find everything that has changed since a certain date and time, and copy it all to a selected folder. You just select the top folder of what you want to backup, select a folder where you want to copy it to, and pick a "modified since" time. In the backup destination, it automatically creates folders to mirror the full path (relative, not including the drive letter) of every file it copies, so an entire hierachy (files modified since the selected time) is backed up.

Each source and destination used are stored and displayed, so that you can reuse those settings. You may select previously used folders (jobs) from the list, or pick new source and destination using the select buttons. The last job completed is highlighted (selected) the next time you run the program.

For each job, the source, destination, date and time of the backup, and last modified date and time used are remembered. By selecting a saved job in the source (left) list, that job's times are displayed, as well as automatic pairing of the source and destination (on the right).

You select the "modified since" date from the calendar. When it starts, you will be able to edit the time of day to include, which defaults to midnight (00:00:00 includes that entire day). This time is 24 hour time, so it helps if you understand that. 5 PM is 17:00:00, not 05:00:00 (5 AM). It's really easy: If it's after noon, just add the hour to 12!

If you check the "Browse destination after copy" box, another dialog (similar to the folder selection box) appears to display the destination folder contents. The dialog is titled "Informational only", just click cancel when you're done.

MasterMind Game (Free) - Last build February 08 2010

MasterMind download

Tired of Solitaire and Minesweeper? This is my version of an old favorite. Versions of this game can be found on the 'net and played in your browser. This one is a Windows executable you can download and safely play on any PC or network.

How to play.

The Start button begins a new game at any time. The Reveal ("I give up") button reveals the hidden colors and stops the game.

The game randomly chooses 4 of six colors, and "hides" them. The object is to guess what the colors are, and in what position. The "Allow repeats" box, if checked, allows the game to use any of the colors more than once in the hidden four. Normally, a color is used only once. Checking or unchecking this box starts a new game.

When each game begins, the timer begins, and your number of guesses is displayed. You get 8 chances to guess which colors are in which positions. The fewest guesses in the shortest time can be an objective if you wish, whether playing alone or with a friend taking turns. Otherwise, you may ignore the timer. No stress.

Along the top of the board are the four secret colors. Below that row are 4 grey balls. You select (click) a color on the right, then select which position (one of the grey balls) you think that color belongs. Once you have assigned a color to each of the 4 positions, the game will score that row. The number on the left tells you how many of the colors you guessed are correct. The number to the right of that tells you how many of the colors are in the correct position. You do not know which color is in the correct position. Note that if repeats are allowed, the scoring can throw you. For example, the game may have hidden 3 blue balls. If any of your guesses is blue, that is scored as 1 correct color, no matter how many of your guesses is blue.

Unless you have checked "Allow repeats", you may not assign a color in a row more than once. You can change a color by selecting another, then assigning it to the ball you want to change. Once you have assigned all four, that row will be scored and you will move to a new row. The last color used in the previous row is the still the currently selected color.

The board displays a new row of grey balls until you guess all four correctly, or until you finish the 8th (last) row, at which time that game ends, and the secret row of colors is revealed.
