I don't know what it is ... the anonymity (and distance) of the internet, perhaps?

Let's say that you have a business selling a product from a brick and mortar store, for a fair and modest price. Would you give your product away? No! How would you ever pay the rent? If your product can be made to order, and someone asked for a green one with custom trim, would you make a green one with custom trim without getting paid for it? No! How would you feel if that person stole your product and gave it to your competitor to copy and make a green one with custom trim for half the price you charge?

Trying to earn a modest income providing design work online, I've learned a lot about how low people will stoop ethically. I do not understand why the internet somehow implies "free for the taking" or that graphic designers are expected to give their time and effort away. I've done work without getting paid, and trusted people, only to get burned. I've tried to be nice and help seemingly ordinary folks who urgently needed designs for something special, and trusted them to pay later. Then they disappear, never pay me and ignore calls and e-Mails. Several concept designs I've sent people as part of a proposal were given to unethical "designers" who offered a cheaper price and just copied my design. Plagiarism is theft, and anyone who calls himself a designer and does such crap is the lowest form of life in this regard. I respond to many RFPs with a bid, then follow up with a concept design. Many of these potential clients don't have the courtesy to reply. I know that some of them too have used my concept design.

If I send you a preview concept design, that does not mean you own it. You don't own anything I created unless you pay me for it! If you like my design, pay me for my services to finalize it. You'll get all the support my clients always get, and you'll own a fine piece of work that meets all your needs. Is this simple means of doing business that difficult to understand?

I've updated my copyright and intellectual property statement, put watermarks on samples, but that only deters an otherwise honest person from considering theft. I have been "nice" putting a small watermark in the corner of designs, but that kind approach has now changed. I must stop being kind, assuming that people are not thieves.

I know that there are those who copy and steal my work. I encounter entrepreneurs (and even business owners one might consider reliable) who always want something for nothing. Alas, I continue to encounter this more and more from too many people, and it finally destroyed my confidence and trust in anyone.

I often choose to offer a discounted deal (or even free work) to non-profit organizations. I've done the same for individuals with a small budget. That's because I like what they're doing and want to help. It does not mean that I'm stupid.

This free logo design is for anyone to whom the statements above might apply. It's for people who send my proposed concept designs to cheap designers to plagiarize. It's for those folks who post an RFP, then ignore proposals, or close it before the deadline without notice so that bidders don't have a chance to submit design concepts. It's for all the rude, arrogant, self-important people who hide behind their keyboard thinking that they have a right to be assholes. If you have a problem with these statements, you are one of these people. Click the link for your free logo, then go away. I want nothing to do with you or your cheap project. Otherwise, thank you for your time and consideration.
